Dave Muriel's Intermediate Art & Craft Album 1961

The following images were made by Dave Muriel and served as his 1961 Intermediate Certificate in Art and Craft exam. They represent the variety of image making that was expected at the halfway stage of the four year course leading to a National Diploma in Design. They also show the range of media we were encouraged to explore. There are also examples of the history of costume, architecture and art as well as perspective and colour theory. Most impressively, Dave was only 17 years of age when he produced this excellent range of work.

At Beckenham School of Art, one became an apprentice, (developing the eye and hand coordination, learning to draw), in what was very much an arts and crafts course, where evening classes were compulsory.

After the Intermediate Exam, it was the turning point for students to choose their future professional discipline, which for Dave Muriel was graphic design and typography.
